  • Untreated wastewater contains elevated organic fractions, which possess high oxygen demand that can lead to oxygen depletion in rivers and dams, causing fish deaths and harm to the environment
  • Nuisance odour generation and fly breeding activities are likely through the discharge of untreated sewage, flies spreading disease
  • High nutrient levels also exist in untreated domestic wastewater and in untreated form have potential to support eutrophication, i.e.   stimulation of excessive aquatic plant and algae growth
