Amanzi Dam Treatment Solutions

Hartebeesport dam

Hartbeespoort dam history

Hartbeespoort dam is in a hypertrophy state. It is 1 of 9 Hypertrophy in RSA and 7 of 9 in Crocodile Marico Catchments.

  • The dam water is excessively enriched by phosphate and nitrogen nutrients, where algal growth is limited by physical conditions, solar radiation and water temperature

Due to rapid urban development and industrial growth in the Hartbeespoort Dam catchment area, the volumes of water loaded with plant nutrients (phosphates and nitrates) reaching the dam have increased.

This results in the deterioration of the water quality due to the loss of oxygen and biodiversity. This excessive fertilization condition  is called eutrophication, which is a    global phenomenon and problem

Technical measures for the improvement of reservoir water quality

Overview

There are 28 Sewage Treatment Works (STW) discharging into rivers that end up in Hartbeespoort Dam, most of which their final effluent does not conform to SA discharge standards

To guarantee that the final effluent from these STW conforms, bio augmentation blends should be introduced to accelerate the bio degradation process, which prevents and pollution including waterborne diseases such as dysentery, diarrhea, typhoid and cholera in the rivers

By adding scientifically selected blends to the final effluent discharge the biodegradation process will continue in the rivers thereby ensuring a clean water quality flowing into dam

Restoration of water quality and disturbed ecosystem

  • Reduce the load to the Brits water treatment plant and Hartbeespoort water treatment

This implies the application of a well-selected mixture of Evaluation of the situation.
