Mauritius Wastewater Situation Analysis
Approximately 30% of Mauritius is connected to the sewer network (2012). Target to connect 80% of population by 2033. Of the ten, four major wastewater treatment plants sharing installed capacity of 170,500m3/day. Treated effluent used for irrigation or discharged to sea or leach fields.
There are many septic tank and leach field type systems. installed in Mauritius, both by government and the private sector (hotels in particular).
Contamination of groundwater is a common occurrence with septic tanks and leach fields
This is elevated in coastal areas where the sea sand is coarse and allows for rapid percolation of effluent into the sea and estuaries.
The Mare Chicose Landfill site is the only waste disposal site on Mauritius receiving waste sludge from sewage operations as well as other organic waste streams.
The area demarcated has reached capacity with consideration of lifting the landfill height being considered. Waste disposal is expected to increase over the next years
